Things to Do
There are many things to do in the area surrounding Wood Advent Farm, many of which we can arrange for guests - all you have to do is ask!

The Farm & Walks

On the farm itself, we have facilities for archery and clay pigeon shooting. We also offer a programme of organised accompanied walking holidays. These holidays can be tailor-made to suit each group, but usually they involve a short walk of about 6 miles on day one, followed by a garden visit or a trip on the train on day two, with a longer walk of about 12 or 13 miles on day three. The newly opened Coleridge Way (www.coleridgeway.co.uk) runs through Wood Advent Farm, so we are an ideal bed & breakfast stopover if you are walking the full distance.

Riding
If you are a horse owner you can bring your horse to Wood Advent. This is a wonderful area for riding, with Exmoor often being described as having some of the best riding country in England , where you can ride for hours without ever having to go on a road! Exmoor is popular with endurance riders, with the famous Golden Horseshoe ride taking place here every May. We can arrange horse riding for guests at nearby stables; either Knowle Manor or Periton Park. www.knowlemanor.co.uk and www.peritonpark.co.uk . These offer rides by the hour or longer half or full day rides.

Cycling
Cycling is popular on Exmoor, and mountain bikers will find the Exmoor terrain both challenging and exciting! Guests can bring their own bikes, or we can arrange bike hire from Pompy's cycle hire in Minehead. We can also provide maps and packed lunches if you plan to spend the whole day exploring.

Watersports
Wimbleball Lake is not far from the farm and offers a variety of watersports, including windsurfing, sailing, and kayaking, as well as flyfishing. There are some lovely walks around the lake, and a picnic area. For more information and a diary of events go to www.swlakestrust.org.uk. We can arrange flyfishing from a number of other ponds and rivers, depending on how experienced you are, or if you prefer we can organise sea fishing trips in the Bristol Channel from the nearby port of Watchet.

Safaris

A land rover safari is a fascinating way to see some of the more inaccessible parts of Exmoor, and you are very likely to see the wild red deer and Exmoor ponies. These safaris start from Dulverton, Dunster or Minehead and operate all year round.

For more information go to www.exmoorwildlifesafaris.co.uk

Places to See
Exmoor falconry near Porlock (www.exmoorfalconry.co.uk) is well worth a visit, where you can see displays of falconry, and go on a hawk walk to see these wonderful birds in action.

Historic Houses & Monuments
There are several interesting historic houses and monuments in the area. Cleeve Abbey, owned by English heritage, (www.english-heritage.org.uk) is just a couple of miles away from Wood Advent. The abbey was founded in 1198, and gives visitors a fascinating glimpse of medieval monastic life 800 years ago. The National Trust owns Dunster Castle, Knightshayes House, and Arlington Court, all well worth a visit. The picture postcard villages of Selworthy, Bossington, Allerford and Luccombe with their pretty thatched cottages are also mostly owned by the National Trust. For more information about other trust properties go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk.

Medieval Villages
Nearby Dunster is a fascinating village. Often referred to as the 'Jewel of Exmoor', there are many buildings dating back to medieval times, including the famous Yarn Market, and visitors taking a stroll around the village will find many things to delight in, before indulging in a Somerset cream tea at one of the quaint little tea shops. Dunster is host to numerous festivals and fetes throughout the year, and more information can be found at www.visitdunster.co.uk.

Somerset Steam Railway

The West Somerset Steam Railway will take you on a leisurely 20 mile journey between Minehead and Bishop's Lydeard. The railway runs through the beautiful Somerset countryside, calling at ten lovingly restored stations along the way, where you can get out to take a walk or have a picnic.

For more information go to www.west-somerset-railway.co.uk.

Cider Farms
Two other attractions close to Wood Advent Farm are Torre Cider Farm at Washford, where you can see how West Country cider is made, and sample some straight from the barrel, and the Bakelite Museum at Williton, where you can see the largest collection of Bakelite and vintage plastics in the world. See www.torrecider.com and www.bakelitemuseum.co.uk for more information.

Coastal Towns & Villages
A little further afield is the spectacularly rugged coastline of North Devon, with the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth which are well worth a day trip. Further down the coast is the resort of Ilfracombe. From here you can take a trip out to Lundy Island , lying ten miles off the North Devon coast in the Bristol Channel. This beautiful remote island is a haven for wildlife and has a dramatic history as a pirate lair. A day trip or an overnight stay on Lundy Island is an unforgettable experience.
